Gynecomastia Surgery

Plastic surgery to correct Gynecomastia symptoms is quite common. Although the surgery is common, surgical treatment is not for everyone. Healthy men who have tried dieting and weight loss with no result, are usually the best candidates for surgery.

If excess fatty and glandular tissue is the cause of the male breast enlargement, the surgeon will remedy the problem by removing the excess tissue with a scalpel and following up with liposuction. The surgery itself generally lasts up to an hour and a half and, in most cases, is outpatient. Although it is advised that the patient stay active throughout recovery, it is important to avoid exercise and strenuous activity for 2-3 weeks following the surgery. At that point, the patient should be feeling normal and able to function normally. Some pain and loss of feeling in the chest may occur for up to a year following the surgery.

For the most part, the surgery is quick and seamless, with few side effects. However, side effects may include infection, skin injury, excessive bleeding, and excessive fluid loss or accumulation. Long-term scars may also result from the surgery, however they are generally quite small. Slightly mismatched breasts or nipple alignment may also occur.

Temporary side effects may include pain, loss of breast sensation and numbness.
